King Charles III

King Charles III is making his first week back at work memorable by announcing a major change to a tradition he founded nearly 50 years ago.

The monarch may have only returned to his royal duties earlier this week, following some time off for cancer treatment, but he's not afraid to implement requests or modifications—a characteristic he's displayed even while resting and recuperating during treatment, as he previously announced two significant changes. One of them is history-making and affects Balmoral Castle, while the other is coming to the family's Sandringham Estate.

Now, King Charles has altered yet another longstanding tradition by revising the name of a charity he started 48 years ago and expanding its services. The organization, which was founded in 1976 as The Prince's Trust with a vision to "help young people transform their lives by developing the confidence and skills to live, learn and earn," has been renamed to The King's Trust—and expanded its efforts to the United States.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the trust will continue to help young people around the world build those key skills to support them into employment," Charles said in a statement read to the audience, per an Independent report. He also expressed his regrets for being unable to attend the event, which was the first organized under the charity’s new name. "Together, we can build a better future for the next generation."

While the 75-year-old was absent from Thursday's gala, on Tuesday, April 30, he was photographed visiting cancer patients and medical staff at the University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre in London. Joining him for his first royal outing since publicly announcing his ongoing battle with cancer was his wife, Queen Camilla.

King Charles' return to the public spotlight is also a clear sign that the royals are ready to return to some sense of normalcy following not one but two recent cancer diagnoses in the family. Weeks after her father-in-law revealed his cancer diagnosis in early February, Princess Kate announced she is also undergoing treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer.
