Kim Kardashian, Alyssa Milano, Rainn Wilson Among Celebrities Evacuating Homes Amid California Wildfires
California wildfires set several neighborhoods ablaze and forced residents to evacuate their homes late Thursday evening, marking yet another instance of climate-related threat to California’s landscape and architecture. As of Friday morning, the Woosley Fire has already impacted more than 10,000 acres of land spanning from Malibu to Calabasas, with approximately 75,000 homes under evacuation orders along the Ventura–Los Angeles County border.
A second, separate fire, the Hill Fire, was also spreading rampantly Thursday, but had reduced in size Friday and eventually settled into the footprint of a 2013 fire, according to officials. Acting governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for Los Angeles and Ventura Counties as multiple structures have already been damaged or destroyed, according to Los Angeles Fire Department Public Information Officer Erik Scott. The cause of the fires still remains under investigation.
Among those who have had to evacuate their homes are celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Alyssa Milano, Rainn Wilson, Scott Baio, and Guillermo del Toro, who all tweeted and shared information on their social media feeds urging residents to evacuate and offering up their own prayers. The scene is reminiscent of the wildfires and subsequent mudslides that overtook Montecito, California, at the beginning of the year, which led to mud-covered streets and gutted homes. Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres were among those whose homes were impacted. Just about one year ago, architects were starting to assess the damage done to homes and landmarks in Northern California following fires that ripped through Napa Valley and surrounding areas. More than 5,700 buildings in total were destroyed in the 2017 fires; architects are still figuring out how to rebuild, and in a way that keeps homes safe from likely future wildfires.
