Kids kick off spring break at RIVERSPORT Adventures canoe, kayak camp

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – It may have been a little chilly to start spring break, but some kids still took the opportunity to get outdoors and learn about kayaking on the North Canadian River near Lake Overholser.

Nearly a dozen kids weren’t going to let a little cold weather keep them from getting outdoors and taking part in RIVERSPORT’s Canoe/Kayak camp.

“Kids are coming out, learning the basics of the sport of kayaking and we have some world class coaches here that are now part of river sport,” Riversport’s Executive Director Mike Knopp said.

“I love teaching,” former Olympian and current Riversport teacher Sabrina Ameghino said. “It’s my favorite part.”

Ameghino is a former kayaker who competed for Argentina in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

“It was the best performance in all my life,” she said.

With 30 years of experience and now with Riversport Adventures, she’s passing down her world class knowledge.

“I really prefer to enjoy the kids than the sport and having fun with them,” she said.

“We’re all about just getting kids active,” Knopp said.

Knopp said it’s all about the basics on Monday. He hopes by the end of it, it will give them a good handle on the sport and maybe even spark a future interest.

“We really encourage kids in Oklahoma City, parents to bring your kids down, give them some exposure to the sport, because, you know, we are one of the best venues in the world,” Knopp said. “Just so many unique opportunities that can be truly life changing.”

Even if not, they can still learn lessons from one of the best.

“To let them know how to work, how to be disciplined, and how to enjoy it during all of those moments,” Ameghino said.

The camp runs Monday through Friday of spring break. They also have an e-sports camp for kids to learn about their water sports through technology and potentially try it on the water later.
