Reflecting on her her role as the nation’s first Asian American vice president, Kamala Harris on Monday shared advice for young people: “kick that fucking door down.”

“What does it mean to you to be the first, and how has your heritage informed your views and your roles as a leader?” host and comedian Jimmy O. Yang asked at a conversation at the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) legislative summit in Washington, D.C.

“My mother would say to me, 'Don't you ever let anybody tell you who you are. You tell them who you are. Don't ever carry as a personal burden, your capacity to do whatever you dream and aspire to do, based on other people's limited ability to see who can do what,” Harris said.

“This is part of what's involved: is that we have to know that sometimes people will open the door for you and leave it open; sometimes they won't,” she continued. “And then you need to kick that fucking door down.”
