Kia AutoSport Athletes of the Week: Spencer Boys Soccer

Columbus, Ga – Some of the best high school soccer is being played on the southside of Columbus this season. The Spencer High School boys soccer team has a perfect 6-0 record so far with a 5-0 record within Region AA competition. Head Coach Quantavis Allen was put in charge of the team just over a year ago, and he’s been so impressed with their growth.

“I’m just glad to see all their hard work pay off. I know that when I first took the job a lot of guys came to me and mentioned how serious they were about soccer. How much they really wanted to win Region and try to make a run at State. I promised them if they come in and work hard, I will work just as hard and we’ll try to prove a point,” said Allen.

This season the Greenwave didn’t just make a point, they made an emphatic statement when they beat ACE this season in a decisive fashion and won the Region 2-AA Championship.

“It was great man. It was the best time and that was the best part of the season right now,” said senior left forward Noel Leon.

“I think the biggest thing they wanted to get a little revenge on ACE. Last year I think ACE beat Spencer 3-1 if I’m not mistaken. So this year even getting the win was, we were happy to see that but we ended up beating them 3-0,” said Allen.

What’s the secret to success for the Greenwave quietly dominating the competition? The boys say it’s as simple as playing for each other and a never surrender mindset.

“The key to success man is really playing as a team. Doing everything possible and fighting hard,” said Leon.

“Last year normally when we went down we would put our heads down and that’s how they beat us. But this time we turned it around,” said senior wing William Marks.

Another impressive trait of this year’s team is Head Coach Allen doesn’t have to push the players hard to get them to work hard.

“A lot times I don’t have to say anything. I mean the captains pretty much handle everything and that makes my job a whole lot easier. They come in and they see the boys doing something wrong, not only in soccer practice but also in school they take their leadership. They go on and get on it themselves. It’s amazing to see the leadership from our captains,” said Allen.
