Kharkiv to move more healthcare facilities underground

Kharkiv City authorities are working to open subterranean intensive care and surgery units, as the city remains under sustained Russian attacks ravaging civilian infrastructure, Kharkiv mayor, Ihor Terekhov, told Ukrainian TV broadcasters on May 10.

According to Terekhov, the City Council is working on the matter jointly with Ukraine’s Healthcare Ministry. The underground facilities are expected to be spread across several city hospitals.

Additionally, the city will expand its network of underground cultural facilities. Terekhov explained that there is a demand from Kharkiv citizens "for performances and live shows in safe spaces."

In April, Ukraine's first underground school opened in Kharkiv, equipped to accommodate 900 students across 20 classrooms.
