Keweenaw Foundation saves Ahmeek Ice Rink

AHMEEK, Mich. (WJMN) – The Keweenaw Foundation is happy to announce that they have reached their goal of raising $100,000 to renovate the ice rink in Ahmeek.

The small Copper Country town of Ahmeek will be getting a much-needed face lift for their outdoor ice rink. The rink is a fixture in the tiny community, with many of the local kids learning how to skate on this rink.

The rink was founded in 1984 by local volunteers who still maintain the rink to this day.  What makes this project so remarkable is the fact that The Keweenaw Foundation was able to raise the 100,000 needed to re-build the board that surround the rink.

Keweenaw Foundation Director Robin Meneguzzo is grateful for the generosity of the community.

“In six or so month’s to raise $100,000 is a really amazing goal that we were to hit and I think it took everyone kind of contributing so it was amazing to see the diversity of people giving the amounts of people were giving the fact that we had our local Foundation supporting the project local businesses it really did feel like this was a very important asset that people did not want to lose and they were willing to kind of step up and help solve the problem which was getting the dollars to get these boards here,” said Meneguzzo.

Rink Manager Ace Laurie says that their ice rink is an important part of the community.

“What this means to the community? these kids got a place to go. It’s a safe clean environment. We got a great bunch of volunteers that help us here, we could always use more. Other than that, it’s great for the community,” said Laurie.

The foundation has already begun purchasing the raw materials needed for the project. Construction should begin in June with completion expected  this coming Fall.
