A tense standoff between authorities and Somali Islamist militants at the Westgate mall in Nairobi, Kenya, continued Monday, as gunfire could be heard and smoke could be seen billowing from the building following a series of explosions.

Dozens of people have been killed during the assault on the mall, which began Saturday.

During a press conference Monday, Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku said two terrorists have been killed, and that some of the estimated 10 to 15 gunmen from the al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab group were dressed as women.

It's unclear how many hostages, if any, remain inside the building, officials said while declaring they had seized control of the complex.

"We are in charge of the situation," Lenku said. "Our people are safe."

"Everyone here in Nairobi is on a razor's edge," CNN's Zain Verjee said Monday. "Residents are terrified. My parents live in this area, too."
