Kentwood voters to consider millage increase for police, fire

KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOOD) — Kentwood voters will soon decide whether to approve a millage increase to support police and fire services.

Officials say Kentwood’s population grew by 11.5% from 2010 to 2020. Over the same period, fire calls for service increased by 36% and police calls for service increased by 14%, according to the city.

The permanent millage increase proposal of 1.95 mills will be on the May 7 ballot. If approved, the millage increase will allow the police and fire departments to hire more staff members and maintain response times, the city says. It’s expected to generate over $5 million in its first year.

To answer the community’s questions about the proposal, the city is holding a forum Monday evening at the Kentwood Police Department’s training room, located at 4742 Walma Ave. SE.

“This forum is intended to be an open discussion where community members can get more information about the ballot proposal, ask questions and share their thoughts on it,” said Police Chief Bryan Litwin in a statement.

Monday’s forum begins at 6 p.m. To learn more about the proposal, you can visit the city of Kentwood’s website.
