At least two people have been killed in a shooting at a supermarket in Kentucky.

A reporter for WDRB News said she spoke to a witness of the shooting in Jeffersontown, who said a woman was killed by gunfire at a local Kroger outlet.

Local police reported multiple injuries, although the total number of victims is unknown.

A dispatcher with the Jeffersontown police department said a suspect was detained following the shooting Wednesday afternoon at the store, about 15 miles from Louisville.

However, the dispatcher declined to confirm details over the status of victims, saying that officers were on the scene.

“We are shocked and saddened by the shooting incident that occurred around 2:30 p.m. today,” Kroger said in a statement. “Thanks to the quick response of the local police department, the suspect was apprehended and our store is now secure.”

An emergency medical technician who happened to be at the store when gunfire broke out says he saw a woman hit and went to help her but realised there was nothing that could be done.

Eric Deacon told WDRB that he heard gunfire and saw two men run out of the Kroger into the car park, shooting at each other.

Mr Deacon said he went to the woman to start CPR on her but realised he could not help her.
