A Kentucky Fried Chicken in North Carolina was left in ruins after an explosion rocked the restaurant early Thursday morning.

Eden Police Department posted a picture on Facebook of what was left of the KFC, located on Highway 14 in Eden, North Carolina. Chief of Police Greg Light said the explosion occurred around 12:35 a.m.

Light said a couple of employees reportedly smelled gas during their shift, but no one was in the restaurant during the explosion and no one was injured.

"Thank goodness everybody was safe," Light told USA TODAY.

WFMY reported receiving numerous calls from residents in the area who said the explosion shook homes nearby.

Police say a gas company will be visiting the site to do a pressure test on the gas line while authorities investigate the origin of the explosion.

Light says they'll likely remain on the scene for most of the day as crews begin to the clean debris from the area.
