The 72-year-old guitarist was close to his pets and said when he was alone they were always there for a cuddle. He added the death of a beloved dog “gives you a sense of space and time”.

He told the Radio Times: "Two died. They reached the end of their string, and they looked at me and said, ‘I’m leaving now.’

“I did love them. You know, you cuddle up if you find yourself alone or whatever.”

The ‘Gimme Shelter’ rocker continues to live life to the full in the Stones - who have been together for 54 years - but admitted the shock of his companions dying forced him to muse about life.

He said: "I’ve always thought animals are a natural part of a house. But also you have to know that… I mean, you know me, I’m going to hang on for ever! But you need to know, ‘I’m going to see this pup die’. It gives you a sense of space and time.”

Keith is rarely seen without a smile on his face and recently promised he won’t “kick the bucket” yet.

Asked what he wants the Rolling Stones legacy to be, at their Exhibitionism show at London’s Saatchi gallery, he said: “To keep going. I ain’t looking to kick the bucket yet, hunny.”

Shortly after the launch of Ehibitionism, Keith announced he’s making a film about his life, teaming up with acclaimed director Julien Temple. It will be about growing up in Dartford, Kent, South East England, after World War Two and the factors that led to rock ‘n’ roll taking over the world in the 1960s.
