What to keep in your first aid kit

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — This week marks Severe Weather Awareness Week in Michigan and safety experts want to help residents make sure they’re prepared for when disaster strikes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 50% of Americans are unprepared when it comes to having a severe weather plan in place or safety kits at the ready.

Brad Greer, the CEO of DrySee, a waterproof bandage brand, reinforced that statistic during an interview with News 8 saying most individuals don’t think about the first aid kits until it’s too late.

“We can be overconfident when we’re driving in severe weather. Whether it’s heavy rain or flooding,” he said.

When it does come to a first aid kit, Greer and the CDC agree on having some essential items. You should have a kit in the house and one in your vehicle. Both kits should contain bandages, pain relief medicine, a battery-powered radio and batteries, lights and a travel phone charger.

Some of the other items to think about including in your kits could be a fire extinguisher, extra blankets and pillows, fresh water and non-perishable food.

Greer also advises households to replace and restock the items each year to ensure they’re prepared.
