Kearny High School celebrates groundbreaking for new classroom building

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Kearny High School celebrated the groundbreaking for its new classroom building Monday, marking the start of the next phase of its campus construction project.

A California Distinguished and Blue Ribbon school, Kearny is constructing a new two-story facility which, according to a release from San Diego Unified School District, will “modernize nine classrooms and the student dining area.”

The building, located along Komet Way, replaces the former student services facility and serves as the main entryway to the campus.

San Diego Unified says the new facility comes with new furniture, flooring, upgraded signage and outdoor collaborative spaces, as well as modern security technology.

The current project is expected to be completed in the winter of 2026.

“It’s so wonderful to see all the work that has been and continues to be done for Kearny High School,” says Sabrina Bazzo, Board of Education trustee for San Diego Unified. “We are so thankful for the local voters who passed our bond measures — you are forever changing the lives of our students.”

The high school has received a series of bond-funded upgrades since 2010.
