KC manufacturing facility holds hiring fair, searching for mechanics

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City manufacturing facility hosted a mechanic hiring fair Wednesday. Like many companies in the auto industry, Holman is working to fill multiple open mechanic positions.

“We have a lot of needs in this location due to expansion and growth within the organization,” said Jennifer Taylor, supervisor of talent acquisition for Holman.

A Holman service report says the auto service industry expects to need more than 600,000 auto technicians by the end of 2023.

The demand for those workers has created higher labor rates in recent years, and it’s also driving up the cost of maintenance.

“We have looked at the market, and we do have an excellent compensation team. So they’re always evaluating what’s out in the market and what candidates are looking for to make sure that we can match their needs,” Taylor explained. “We’ve been able to evaluate that and offer a competitive pay.”

Holman’s hiring event on Wednesday was for installation mechanics.

“This is a very detail-oriented job. Our clients depend on us to push out quality vehicles that they can utilize for their day-to-day. So we not only affect their business, but also ours. So we want to make sure that we give top quality service and that we make sure that they have exactly what they asked for when we deliver these trucks,” Taylor said.

Hiring and retaining technicians has been a pain point because of competition from other industries that also need skilled workers.

“We know that there is a big need, and there’s always a lot of other competing organizations,” Taylor said. “We offer very competitive benefits. We have a $5,000 sign-on bonus for our employees and referral bonus programs.”
