The Chiefs are in the planning stage ahead of Sunday’s road game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Whether this week’s preparations include kicker Harrison Butker (left ankle sprain) remains to be seen.

“We’ve just got to see,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Monday. “I mean, that’s what it is right now. It’s kind of wait-and-see. … Let’s just see how this week goes.

“Every day he’s making improvement and that’s important.”

Butker originally suffered the ankle injury in the Chiefs’ season-opening win at the Arizona Cardinals. He missed two days of on-field work last week, resulting in the Chiefs declaring Butker as out for Thursday Night Football’s matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Chiefs had a backup plan, however, signing free agent Matt Ammendola to their practice squad in the days following Butker’s injury. With Butker still ailing, they then elevated Ammendola to the active roster for last Thursday’s game against the L.A. Chargers.

Ammendola filled in admirably, drilling two field goals and three extra points in the Chiefs’ 27-24 win. He also handled all the kickoffs, sending four of six kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.

“I thought I did good,” Ammendola said after the game. “At the end of the day, you’ve got to step up when your name is called and go out there and enjoy the moment.”

Butker’s ability to return to practice this week will ultimately determine his status against the Colts. But if it’s Ammendola handling the kicking duties again in Week 3, the Chiefs appear to have confidence because of what he accomplished as an emergency replacement.

“I thought when it was all said and done, I thought he really did a nice job,” Reid said. “That’s a tough situation to come into, especially here at Arrowhead when it’s as lively as it was. I mean, our crowd was loud and there was a lot of excitement in there.

“I was happy for him for that, and I felt comfortable with him kicking, obviously, or we wouldn’t have him do it. He did a nice job with it.”

The Chiefs return to the practice field Wednesday.
