Jason Kelce made it official Monday, announcing his retirement from the NFL.

The news conference took longer than Kelce likely anticipated, because he was overcome with emotion from the start. Kelce stopped often as he choked back tears.

During his announcement, Kelce talked about some of the highs and lows of his time in the NFL, starting with the moment he was drafted by the Eagles in 2011.

“I won’t forget the call I got from Andy Reid on draft day and my father rushing into the room with tears streaming down his face because his son’s dreams had just been realized. It had just been announced on TV I had been drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles,” Jason Kelce said.

“And I won’t forget two years later, that same man and my brother receiving a call and him being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs. This time, the tears streaming down both my father and I’s face as my brother had just realized his own (dreams).”

There were a lot of tears Monday, including among the Kelce family. When Jason was done speaking, he received hugs from Travis and their parents, Ed and Donna, as well as Jason’s wife, Kylie.

Travis Kelce, who co-host the “New Heights” podcast with his brother, wiped tears from his eyes during the news conference.

Jason Kelce noted the size of his family at one point on Monday, saying it was Ed and Donna, their boys and an aunt and uncle. That’s all the Kelce boys knew growing up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

It’s clear that they are a tight-knit family.
