KC announces 162,000 trash carts will be rolled out to residents in 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In an effort to work toward a “cleaner and greener community,” the City of Kansas City has announced its mission to bring thousands of 65-gallon trash carts to residents around the metro starting on May 1.

According to a news release, this launch hopes to transform how Kansas City tackles waste management and reduce litter by making trash bags inaccessible to wildlife.

This mission is made possible by an $8.5 million investment approved by the City Council that allows 162,000 trash carts to be distributed throughout the city by October.

Residents will receive an informational pamphlet in the mail with instructions describing how to use their new cart and additional waste management resources.

The release also said that, although current waste management trucks have automated features to help crews empty trash into the truck, introducing this new trash and recycling collection will help the city move toward a fully automated and streamlined waste collection, and better customer service during severe weather.

The city is hosting a launch celebration at 8 a.m. on Wednesday at 1301 N. Choteau Trafficway in Kansas City, Missouri on the northwest side of the building.

Elected officials will be in attendance and some plan to speak at the event, including Mayor Quinton Lucas, Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw, and other council members.
