Kayaker rescued from Cohocton River in Avoca

AVOCA, N.Y. (WETM) — A kayaker from Livingston County was rescued from the Cohocton River on Tuesday morning.

According to the New York State Police Department, the Wayland barracks received a call about an overturned kayak at about 8:55 a.m. on April 16. Police say a man who was fishing near the Dollar General in the Town of Avoca saw an overturned kayak, an oar, and a coffee mug floating down the Cohocton River. Around the same time, the 31-year-old kayaker called Steuben County 911 and said his kayak overturned, and he was on a peninsula in the river.

A New York State Police Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Unit responded to the scene, and the UAS located the kayaker. Bath Swift Water Rescue rescued the kayaker from the water. Bath Ambulance treated him, and he was released at the scene.

The New York State Police Department, Bath Swift Water Rescue, Bath Ambulance, the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, and Steuben County Emergency Services were involved in the rescue operation.
