Kayaker pulled from ocean in Pebble Beach

A kayaker who was attempting to paddle from Monterey, California to Honolulu, Hawaii was found face-down in the water Tuesday by local surfers.

The man's kayak capsized near Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach sometime between 5 am. and 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Surfer Jon Kramer, 61, of Pacific Grove, was checking the waves when he spotted an empty kayak. While on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, he saw a person floating in the ocean.

Kramer swam 50 yards into the ocean and pulled the man towards the shore.

"I was sure he was dead. He was blue, he looked dead as dead can be," Kramer told KSBW. "But you never give up hope."

A rescue team helped Kramer pull the victim all the way out of the water.

Paramedics performed CPR on the beach and they were able to get the man's pulse back. He was transferred to a Monterey hospital and was listed in critical condition, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The victim had texted a friend at 5 a.m., saying that he had been paddling all night, but was still struggling to make it out of Monterey Bay.

Kramer believes the kayaker ran into trouble on the south side of Spanish Bay, at a spot locals call "Satans."

"It's a pretty apt name because the current and the waves are deadly. On a day like today, if you were pulled into that, there is no way you can survive. It is deadly," Kramer said.

Kramer said the man's kayak was loaded with supplies to last for a three-month journey across the Pacific Ocean. The kayak was equipped with solar panels, extra paddles, communication technology, and other supplies.
