NEW YORK (AP) — Off in the makeshift model dressing room at their New York Fashion Week presentation Monday, Katie Holmes and Jeanne Yang picked out the outfits they'd like to take home with them.
Holmes wanted the gathered dress in printed chiffon — perfect to drop off daughter Suri at school, she said — while Yang eyed the black raffia shorts suit.
The stylist asks her actress-friend about her choice. "I don't know if I can rock the shorts."
"Go for it," said Holmes. "I wonder if I could rock the bra top. I don't know where I think I'm wearing it to rock the bra top, but it's good to try. Maybe I'll wear it to Starbucks," she said with a laugh.
The approachable banter is translated into their spring collection, which they say is about "wearable elegance." It was a small presentation in a Chelsea gallery with only 14 looks. The duo said they wanted to start their business quietly, grow slowly and do it right.
"The woman Katie and Jeanne design for is an adventurer; she enjoys all aspects of life and creates her own path," according to the notes.
The mix they offer for their muse included a black silk V-neck gown with leather piping and a khaki camp-style shirtdress with a lace-up V at the neck. The aforementioned bralette was paired with a tie-front blazer and men's-style trousers.
"We don't sell a lot of bra tops but they are important for the show," Yang said.
