Katherine Langford’s heartbreaking performance as high schooler Hannah Baker wowed fans when 13 Reasons Why hit Netflix earlier this year, and now we know it wowed members of the Hollywood Foreign Press, too. Katherine Langford’s work has earned her a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Drama category.

Though the show’s depiction of teen suicide, rape, and other disturbing content sparked controversy when it was released in March, 13 Reasons also earned a loyal following. Langford recognized these devoted fans when she responded to her nomination Monday with a statement:

“Words can not express my sheer excitement and gratitude for being nominated by the HFPA this morning for portraying ‘Hannah Baker,’ a young woman whom I have come to truly love and understand. Hannah’s story resonated with so many people, and I feel truly grateful to Netflix, Paramount TV, Brian Yorkey, Tom McCarthy, Selena Gomez, and all of our tremendous producers…and to our incredibly talented cast — who are also my dear friends, and our wonderful crew for bringing this story to life.”

“Most of all, my sincere hope is that the recognition continues to shine a light on so many of the important life issues and struggles we portray in 13 Reasons Why. I’m forever grateful to have been given this opportunity and will continue to work hard to bring dignity, respect, and grace to such a powerful character.”

Langford joins an elite club of actresses in her category, including Elisabeth Moss (who already won an Outstanding Lead Actress Emmy for her role in The Handmaid’s Tale), Outlander’s Caitriona Balfe, The Deuce‘s Maggie Gyllenhaal, and The Crown’s Claire Foy. There’s stiff competition, yes, and Langford’s fans and costars are rooting for her. “Hannah Baker broke our hearts and helped us all heal together,” Christian Novarro, who plays Tony Padilla on the show, said on Twitter.

Season 2 of the Selena Gomez-produced Netflix drama is set to drop sometime in 2018, and we’re excited to see where the gripping story takes us.
