Alert, alert! Are you sitting down right now? Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (a.k.a. the beloved Kate Middleton) is currently in labor, Kensington Palace confirmed on Twitter.

"Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London earlier this morning in the early stages of labour. The Duchess travelled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital with The Duke of Cambridge," the statement reads.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced the pregnancy back in September and confirmed an April due date a month later. Even the parents themselves reportedly don't know whether they're expecting a prince or a princess, but the baby's sex will have no impact on the British line of succession for the first time ever.

A law ending what's called male-preference primogeniture took action in 2013 before Princess Charlotte's birth, cementing her place in fourth ahead of any future siblings. Prior to the change, younger brothers would outrank older sisters. This new baby will definitely bump Prince Harry from his spot at fifth in line to the throne, however.

British bookies took odds on names for both genders, with Mary, Alice, and Victoria jumping out as favorites for a girl and Arthur and Albert remaining popular for boys. Members of the royal family often pick traditional names with plenty of history behind them. While the child won't have a last name as per custom, he or she will automatically become a His or Her Royal Highness with the title of Prince or Princess of Cambridge.

The world will likely first catch a glimpse of this bundle of joy when the Duke and Duchess exit the Lindo Wing and stand on the steps for the traditional photo-op. That's where they debuted their first two children, and where Princess Diana showed off her two infant sons as well.
