Kate Hudson Opens Up About Goldie Hawn's Parenting Style: 'There's Another Side to Mom'

When Kate Hudson sees her mom, Goldie Hawn, she doesn't just see her parent. She sees her "confidante."

"I think people get an idea of her spirit and she's just this wonderful person and she's a light and she's a great mom. She's a very strong presence and she was strict at times," Hudson, 37, told PEOPLE on Friday. "She wasn't always like what her Instagram shows. There's another side to mom."

Hudson certainly followed in her mother's footsteps – she currently stars in Mother's Day – but Hawn never pressured her or her siblings into getting into the family business. (Hudson's brother, Oliver Hudson, is also an actor.)

"What makes mom the best is that she never put any expectations too high on the kids," Hudson said. "She just wanted us to be doing the things that made us happy, as long as we were working hard, but we never had to live up to something."

Asked the best advice her mom has given her, Hudson said, "It's not really advice so much as she's my confidante and we talk about our life and her life, and we support each other now that I'm an adult. Where she's really wonderful is leading an authentic life and a truthful life."

Hudson took a one-day break from promoting her newest movie on Friday to attend the opening of new nightclub Intrigue at Wynn Las Vegas.

There, while donning a black Milly jumpsuit, she hung out with friends as a waterfall served as the centerpiece of the room. Later, she moved into an adjacent private room, where she hung out alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Rihanna and Charlotte McKinney.

"I'm not usually up in the club, it's not my thing," she said. "But this is a wonderful excuse to have fun with my friends."
