Katie’s Place Clubhouse opens new location in Lackawanna County

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A local non-profit that supports those with mental illness is expanding in a new location in the Electric City.

Tim Rodwell, Kelly Amberlabage, and Jeff Moran hang out together around a table inside Katie’s Place Clubhouse in Scranton.

“When I’m here I feel so needed, so accepted, I feel so warm and wanted,” says Amberlabage.

The group of friends are having a blast, but they’re also working as members in the non-profit.

“I love it ’cause it’s like a family,” says Rodwell.

The non-profit supports those with mental illness.. Learning valuable skills to find and maintain employment.

Members like Tim work in hospitality and are busy in the kitchen, but others like Kelly and Jeff work on administrative duties.

The Penn Avenue location has been more than a year in the making, as 28/22 News saw when the location was first bought.

All the hard work now celebrated Thursday in its grand opening, bringing pride to the non-profit. That honors the legacy of Katie Shoener, a woman who lived with bipolar disorder and died from suicide.

“If you have an illness, don’t be shy to come and take a look at Katie’s Place,” says Rodwell.
