TOPEKA, Kansas (WJW) – The Topeka Zoo is mourning the sudden loss of an ostrich.

The zoo announced the death of Karen the ostrich on April 19.

The details of her passing serve as an important reminder about animal care and safety at the zoo, the zoo said in a statement.

“In this instance, Karen reached beyond her exhibit fence to grab the keys of a staff member. She immediately swallowed the keys,” the zoo said.

“Zoo staff consulted with experts across the country to undergo surgical and non-surgical efforts to minimize the impact of the keys. Unfortunately, these efforts were unsuccessful.”

Karen had been a resident at the zoo since March of 2023 and was known for her water loving habits, like swimming in the pool and playing in the sprinkler, according to the zoo.

“We are devastated by the loss of Karen,” expressed Fawn Moser, Interim Director of the Topeka Zoo. “She was not just an animal; she was a beloved member of our community. Our thoughts are with our dedicated animal care team, who formed deep bonds with Karen during her time with us.”

The Topeka Zoo says it is implementing new protocols to prevent an incident such as this in the future.

“In light of this tragic event, the Topeka Zoo conducted a thorough investigation and is taking appropriate actions regarding the team member involved,” the zoo said in a statement.

Karen was 5 years old.

According to the National Zoo, some ostriches can live up to 40 years in the wild. In captivity, they can live well into their sixties.
