Dec. 12—Karen Dyer has been hired as director of strategic initiatives with the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau and will begin her new duties Jan. 1, the CVB announced Tuesday.

She has been the executive vice president for Advancement and Strategic Initiatives at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and has more than 27 years of experience in higher education fundraising and project development.

The CVB position will drive strategic initiatives for the bureau and support the development of long-term growth plans in conjunction with the community's overall expansion in tourism, according to a news release from the CVB.

Dyer also will be responsible for overseeing projects including funding and community outreach campaigns.

The CVB witnessed record innkeeper tax revenues in 2023, at $3 million to date. In addition, its work on the See You in Terre Haute external outreach has helped facilitate direct ties to visitors and their time and money spent in the community.

"With an additional 1.1 million new visitors expected in 2024 at the opening of the casino and the ever-growing expansion of venues such as the Terre Haute Convention Center, Lavern Gibson Cross Country Course, Griffin Bike Park, The Mill, and the potential upcoming indoor/outdoor sports facility, and more, visitor awareness is part of the strategic plan for retaining regular visitors to our community," said David Patterson, CVB executive director.

"We aren't just working to have them visit one time; we want to create memorable experiences that retain their interest in Terre Haute."

Dyer has led many high-level, multi-million-dollar projects requiring fundraising initiatives, organizational skills, collaboration and relationship-building.

Most recently, she led the strategic and master planning efforts and coordinated fundraising to build the Knoerle Sports Center at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.

"My unique experiences in higher education afforded me the opportunity to prepare for this important role serving the community," Dyer said in the news release.

She added, "My diverse background equips me to hit the ground running, and I'm excited about levering my skills to help our community continue to grow."
