Kanye West Has Less Say in Kim’s Style Than Miley Cyrus’s Stylist

Asking your friend or partner to help you pick out an outfit does not make them your stylist. The same applies to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. While he has certainly influenced her style, he’s not the only one with a say.

Shortly after they began dating, Kardashian’s style went from velour sweatsuits to couture latex bodysuits, from oversize belts to ballgowns, and from shiny to sheer — and we thought we had West to thank. “I really think that my relationship with my husband Kanye [West] really changed everything,” Kardashian told CNN Style earlier this year. “I mean, back in the day, I thought I had the best style. I look back at outfits and I’m, like, mortified.”

Like many of us, Kardashian turns to her husband for clothing advice. However, unlike some partners who will shrug and say “Sure” to any fashion-related question, Kardashian’s husband is actually interested. “I love my husband’s opinion, so I always ask his opinion on everything and he always helps me put together my looks. … Kanye sees my body obviously every day, so he can understand what works well on my body type, so it’s been really fun to dress and we try things that work and some things that don’t work,” she said.

Thanks to interviews like that one, many have come to the false conclusion that the rapper-turned-designer is her only stylist. But it seems that’s not the case. We were tipped off over the weekend when we saw that Miley Cyrus’s stylist Simone Harouche had put together Kardashian’s look for a night out with her husband in Miami.

We then remembered that Harouche has been working with the reality star for years and was on hand during her wedding to Kris Humphries.

“I did style Kim this weekend,” Harouche tells Yahoo Style of Kardashian’s latest look: a Norisol Ferrari black lingerie corset with a thong back and a sheer dress on top, paired with strappy sandals and a silver diamond choker. “We have been working together more and more this summer,” she adds.

Then there’s Jenke Ahmed Tailly, who opened up about styling both Kardashian and West last summer. Tailly was the one who chose the chic feathered Proenza Schouler number Kardashian wore to the 2015 CFDAs (the dress that caught on fire). And Tailly actually said West has less involvement than people assume. "People think he dictates what she wears, but that’s not the case,” Tailly told Elle. “I think the person she loves to please first is her husband. So his opinion does matter — he might suggest something or give us an opinion about something we’re not sure about — but she knows what she likes.”

And let’s not forget Christine Centenera. A few months ago we reported that, according to the Sunday Telegraph, Centenera, who dressed Kardashian on a freelance basis, was being paid up to $1 million annually to keep the star firmly on best dressed lists around the world. That’s a lot of pressure.

The New York Post went as far as to say that West isn’t responsible for his wife’s style transformation, that a stylist named Monica Rose turned her into the Givenchy-clad trendsetter she is today, “Getting to watch the evolution of her style has been the most rewarding experience of my career,” Rose told The Post.

“She said, ‘I’d love for you to come to my house and look at my closet, and let me know what I need to do to get on those best-dressed lists,’ ” recalls Rose, 38, who said she threw out around 30 Hervé Léger bandage dresses in Kardashian’s closet.

Harouche promises that “Kanye still plays a big role in the overall vision,” but it seems he’s been given more credit than he’s due, and that he’s just a small piece in this ever-evolving fashion puzzle.
