Kansas school district wants to make school 4 days a week

NICKERSON, Kan. (KSNW) – Another school district in Kansas wants to change school to four days a week.

USD 309 Nickerson-South Hutchinson is deciding whether or not to make the switch for the next school year. The superintendent says a committee talked to other school districts that have made the switch.

After doing a community survey, out of about 500 responses, 66% said they liked the idea of a four-day week, and the rest were against it. The superintendent says making the change could help them with hiring.

“Retaining people has been difficult, and recruiting new people is difficult as well. And so I wouldn’t say we’ve had a problem with it, but I will tell you that when we have a given opening, we certainly don’t get the applications we used to,” Superintendent Curtis Nightingale said.

Nightingale also says it could impact the district’s enrollment after the new school choice law takes effect on July 1.

“What sets us apart? Why would a family want to attend our district or not attend our district? And could four-day be an incentive, or would that deter families from coming,” Nightingale said.

There will be community info sessions next week on Tuesday, March 5, at 7 p.m. at South Hutchinson Elementary School and on Wednesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. at Nickerson High School.
