Kansas man convicted of attempted manslaughter returns to prison for rape and stabbing case
KSNF/KODE — A Columbus man charged with attempted murder and rape in 2022, is sentenced to nearly nine years in prison.

Steven Tyner, 50, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated battery as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.
The rape and attempted murder charges were dismissed.
This case began two years ago when a woman showed up at a Joplin hospital with stab wounds. She told authorities she was raped and stabbed and named Tyner as her attacker.

Tyner along with Ivy Simpson, were charged in the case.
Simpson pleaded guilty to aggravated battery and was sentenced to a little more than three years in the case.

Tyner is no stranger to the inside of a prison cell. He was sentenced to five years in a Kansas prison after a jury found him guilty of attempted voluntary manslaughter for a shooting in 2006.
In that case, Darrel Henkle and Brenda Brock were shot during an argument at Brock’s residence along Spring River. Tyner, Henkle and Brock were all living there at the time.
Brock was shot nine times. She died at the scene. Henkle was wounded in the ankle, hip, back, and arm. A Cherokee County jury found Tyner guilty of attempting to kill Henkle, but acquitted him for Brock’s murder.
Tyner’s attorney told the court the two men fought over the gun after Henkle shot Brenda.
