Kansas Highway Patrol presents Honorary Trooper Award to man who saved trucker’s life

FORD COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Highway Patrol presented Brad Nichols of Willmar, Minnesota, with an Honorary Trooper Award for saving a trucker’s life in January.

According to the KHP, at 5:20 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 19, a semi-trailer hauling a fuel tanker headed west on U.S. Highway 54 crossed the median and was hit by an eastbound semi-trailer hauling a reefer trailer.

As a result, both semi-trailers immediately caught on fire.

The driver hauling the tanker trailer was able to escape on his own.

The driver hauling the reefer trailer was unable to get out on his own due to a broken ankle and injury to his head.

The KHP says Nichols stopped to help.

“Mr. Nichols approached the burning reefer truck. Mr. Nichols cut the driver’s seatbelt and got him out of the truck prior to it becoming fully engulfed in flames saving the driver’s life. With no concern for his own safety, Mr. Nichols saved the trapped driver and removed him from immediate danger,” said the KHP.

Major Mitch Clark, Captain Randy Mosher and Master Trooper Jeremiah Proberts presented the award to Nichols.
