Kansas high school basketball state tournament scores: Find Wichita-area team updates

Scores from the Kansas high school state basketball tournaments are rolling in, with opening-round games kicking off Wednesday.

Here is the one-stop place to find the scoreboard, KSHSAA brackets, game times and locations for all state basketball games, as well as the semifinal schedule for Friday’s games.

Class 5A boys: Kapaun and Maize South move on, Andover eliminated

Kapaun Mt. Carmel held off a late rally by De Soto to punch its ticket to Friday’s semifinals with a 60-53 opening-round win at White Auditorium in Emporia.

A stifling defense limited De Soto to just four field goals and 22% shooting in the first half, as the Crusaders opened up a 30-14 halftime lead. But the Wildcats made a game out of it with a furious comeback in the third quarter, which spilled over into the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to 47-41 with more than five minutes still remaining in the game.

Kapaun extended its lead to 12 with defensive stops and made free throws, but De Soto made one last push to come within 57-53 with 41.8 seconds left. Corbin Johnson and Brooks Powers made three free throws — all of Kapaun’s fourth-quarter points came at the foul line — to clinch the victory.

Meanwhile, Andover did well to win another sub-state championship to return to the state tournament, but the defending champions bowed out in a 57-32 loss to Topeka Highland Park.

It was a rematch of last year’s thrilling semifinal game that Andover rallied to win in the closing seconds, but this time Highland Park exacted revenge with a runaway victory.

Josh Kim scored 15 points and seven rebounds to lead the way for Andover, which finished off an 18-5 season.

Kapaun (20-3) will play Highland Park (22-1) in Friday’s 2 p.m. semifinals.

On the other side of the bracket, Maize South (23-0) did enough to keep its undefeated season alive in a 61-53 victory over No. 8 seed Great Bend. The Mavericks will play Kansas City Piper in Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinals.

Great Bend trimmed the deficit to one point in the third quarter, but Maize South used a 10-2 run to open up a cushion it used to secure the win. Darius Felton scored a team-high 15 points with six rebounds, while Jeron Askren scored 14 points and Michael Kates added 13 points. The Mavericks played without their 6-foot-7 star senior Tory Homan, who was out due to injury.

Class 6A girls: Derby wins nail-biter, Wichita Heights loses

Late scores from Macayla Askew and Destiny Smith lifted Derby to a dramatic 48-47 win over Shawnee Mission Northwest at Koch Arena in Wichita.

A back-and-forth battle tilted in SM Northwest’s favor when Gabby Jackson scored a go-ahead basket for a 45-44 lead with 1:19 remaining in the fourth quarter. After the Cougars tacked on a free throw, Askew tied it up with a basket inside to bring Derby level at 46 with 38 seconds left.

Another free throw put SM Northwest in front, but Smith, Derby’s senior guard, put the Panthers in front for good, 48-47, with a driving basket with 12 seconds left.

Both teams traded turnovers late with SM Northwest firing a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer that missed. Madison Smith scored a team-high 15 points for Derby, while Destiny Smith chipped in 11 and Jaden Wilson scored nine with six rebounds.

Derby (20-3) will play Washburn Rural (16-7) in Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinals.

Washburn Rural prevailed in a back-and-forth tussle with Wichita Heights, 50-43, in a rematch of a January tournament game that the Junior Blues also won by the same score.

The City League champions actually scored the first 10 points of the game, but Washburn Rural battled back to take a 32-31 lead after the third quarter. Heights trailed by just one point, 37-36, entering the final three minutes, but a late Washburn Rural spurt provided the separation for the victory.

Height star junior SaMiyah Ellis scored a team-high 15 points, while Heaven Gilbert and Mya Mayberry added seven rebounds each. The Falcons ended a successful 20-3 season with a trip back to the state tournament.

Class 4A girls: Wellington, McPherson both advance, Clearwater drops out

In an AV-CTL rematch, Wellington used a decisive 20-2 run against Andale to pull away from a close game and score a 71-53 opening-round victory at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.

The Crusaders will face another AV-CTL opponent in Friday’s 2 p.m. semifinals, where Wellington (22-1) will face McPherson (19-4). It is the third straight state semifinal appearance for Wellington.

Wellington was led by four scorers in double figures, as Valerie Norwood, Dru Zeka and Britt Zeka all scored 14 points and Lyndi Barton added 13 points. Andale was led by 13 points from Reagan Winter, 12 points from Maddison Lies and nine points by Taya Orth.

Andale clawed back within four, 46-42, late in the third quarter, but Wellington blew open the game with a 20-2 run. Andale finished with a 14-9 season.

Meanwhile, McPherson registered a wire-to-wire, 66-44 victory over Ottawa in the 4-vs.-5 matchup.

The Bullpups were led by a game-high 18 points from Karter Alvord, who added six steals, while Jaela Thompson added 14 points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals and Jayla McLeod scored 13 points. McPherson forced 23 turnovers and shot 60% from the field in the win.

On the other side of the bracket, Clearwater wrapped up a successful 15-win season with a 64-42 opening-round loss to Fort Scott. Elizabeth Tjaden scored a game-high 20 points for Clearwater.

Class 3A boys: Cheney loses opening-round heartbreaker

Cheney’s quest to follow up its football state championship with a basketball title came to a heartbreaking close in a 54-51 loss to Southeast of Saline in the opening round at Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Cheney fell behind by 10 early, then rallied to take a 36-35 lead entering the fourth quarter on a Quaid Thomas bucket inside. When Southeast of Saline pulled in front, Josh Burdick answered with a 3-pointer to put Cheney back in control.

But it was the Trojans who made the plays in the final two minutes, pulling ahead by three and holding on when Cheney’s potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer bounced off the rim.

Cheney senior Jack Voth led the way for the Cardinals (21-3) with 15 points, while Burdick added 13 and Colter McDaniel scored 11.

Class 2A girls: Wichita Independent prevails for close opening win

In a clash between a top team from Central Plains League and a top team from Central Kansas League, Wichita Independent pulled out a 39-36 win over Hillsboro at United Wireless Arena in Dodge City.

Freshman Zoey Buckner-Franklin led the way for Independent with a team-high 14 points, while Deena Holmes added nine rebounds. Hillsboro (22-2) was led by Zaylee Werth, who scored a game-high 19 points with six rebounds.

Independent (20-3) faces undefeated Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan (24-0) in Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinal.

Class 1A boys: Cunningham mounts 17-point comeback victory

Cunningham’s chances looked when it found itself in a 17-point hole to Bucklin in the first quarter of an opening-round Class 1A Division 2 state tournament game at Barton Community College.

But the Wildcats steadily chipped away at the deficit and finally took the lead for good on a late 3-pointer by Luke Albers, finishing off a 17-point come-from-behind victory to knock off Bucklin, 70-66.

Albers and teammate Will Wegerer each scored 25 points with nine rebounds to lead the furious comeback by Cunningham, which still trailed by 10 points in the final minute of the third quarter.

Cunningham reeled off a 14-4 run to tie the game, then Albers’ clutch 3 with 2:10 remaining in the fourth quarter broke a 62-62 tie for good. Bucklin trimmed the deficit to 67-66, but Dagim Reed hit two straight free throws for Cunningham and Bucklin missed two shots before Wegerer iced the game from the free throw line with 13 seconds left.
