Kansas high school basketball state tournament scores: Maize South girls top Aquinas

Scores from the Kansas high school state basketball tournaments are rolling in, with opening-round games continuing on Thursday.

Here is the one-stop place to find the scoreboard, KSHSAA brackets, game times and locations for all state basketball games, as well as the semifinal schedule for Friday’s games.

Class 5A girls: Maize South ends Aquinas’ reign, Andover moves on

Maize South put an end to the championship reign of St. Thomas Aquinas, the seven-time defending state champions in 5A.

Skylar Seals exploded for 24 points, Ashley Singhateh delivered 21 points and Sophie Hurley made four straight free throws in the final minute of overtime to lift the Mavericks to a stunning 55-52 overtime victory over Aquinas at White Auditorium in Emporia.

Maize South held a narrow lead for the majority of the game, but Aquinas fought back to take a 39-38 lead entering the final minute of the fourth quarter. Singhateh scored a go-ahead basket, Aquinas answered right back and Singhateh tied the game again with a free throw with 11.1 seconds left to force overtime.

Aquinas darted out to a 46-43 lead early in overtime, but Seals came up clutch with a pair of free throws and then a go-ahead 3-pointer to put Maize South up 51-50 with 48.6 seconds left. The Saints took the lead back on a pair of free throws, but Hurley drew a foul on Maize South’s next possession and calmly sank both free throws to put the Mavericks up 53-52 with 27.3 seconds left.

Aquinas had an open look for the lead, but Maize South rebounded and nearly ran the final 19 seconds off the clock by passing the ball around Aquinas’ defense. Finally, Hurley was fouled with 0.5 seconds left and tacked on two more free throws to secure the victory.

Maize South (22-1) will play either Emporia or Bishop Carroll in Friday’s 8 p.m. semifinal.

Earlier in the day, Andover used a dominant second-half to pull away from its opening-round game for a 65-42 win over Blue Valley Southwest.

No. 8 seed BV Southwest led 13-11 after the first quarter, but Andover pulled ahead for a 27-22 halftime lead and opened up an 18-point lead in the third quarter to cruise to victory. Freshman Bella Bouddhara scored a team-high 19 points, while Utah signee Brooke Walker finished with 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and six steals.

The Trojans improved to 23-0 this season and will play in Friday’s 4 p.m. semifinal against either Topeka Seaman or De Soto.

Class 6A boys: Wichita Heights tops Campus, Wichita East falls

Wichita Heights opened with a dominant 86-57 victory over Campus in its opening-round game at Koch Arena.

The Falcons (22-1) jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never looked back, as the City League champions cruised to Friday’s 8 p.m. semifinals and will face the winner between Blue Valley Northwest and Wichita Northwest.

The game featured two of the best players in the state in Heights’ T.J. Williams, a Wichita State signee, and Campus’ Andrell Burton Jr., a Drake signee. Williams finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds on his future home court, while Burton finished with 16 points for the Colts (14-9).

Chase Robinson scored a game-high 25 points to lead Heights, while Jalihn Timmons added 15 and Campus’ Kaason Thomas scored a team-high 20 points.

In the opening game, it looked as if the Cinderella run of No. 8 seed Wichita East would continue.

But the Blue Aces eventually ran out of steam, as undefeated and top-ranked Shawnee Mission Northwest surged ahead for a 72-57 opening-round win at Koch Arena.

The 15-point final margin doesn’t reflect how competitive East was for the majority of the game. The Blue Aces, which entered the postseason with just five wins, led 45-40 halfway through the third quarter over the state’s top-ranked team.

But SM Northwest ended the third quarter on a 15-4 run and never looked back to advance to the semifinals.

Class 4A: McPherson’s unbeaten season continues, Circle falls

A late rally by No. 8 Fort Scott made things interesting in the opening-round game at Tony’s Pizza Event Center, but top-seeded McPherson held off the charge for a 61-48 victory.

The Bullpups closed the first half on a 10-2 run, capped by an alley-oop from Kyden Thompson to Gabe Pyle, to take a 29-20 lead. The lead grew to as many as 12 points in the third quarter, but Fort Scott scrapped back to within 42-35 entering the final eight minutes.

McPherson led by 10 points with less than five minutes remaining, but Fort Scott made one final push to trim the deficit to 50-45 with 2:30 remaining. Following a timeout, McPherson ran a full-court, out-of-bounds play that resulted in a Thompson breakaway dunk to give the team the breathing room it needed to secure the victory.

The Bullpups (23-0) continued their unbeaten season and advanced to Friday’s 4 p.m. semifinal, where they will face Baldwin, who defeated Circle 63-53 behind a significant advantage at the foul line in the second half. Landon Boldra scored a team-high 15 points for the Thunderbirds (20-3), while Camden Beahm scored 14 and Ethan Koehn added 11.
