Kansas farmers hopeful for rain soon

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Kansas farmers are praying for rain as the growing season gets going.

The latest drought monitor shows about half the state is abnormally dry while central and northeast Kansas are under moderate drought.

Farmers say without meaningful moisture, their crops could suffer.

“We’ve been coming up awfully short the last several rain chances that we’ve had. Maybe two-tenths at a time is all we’ve been able to grab out here in my neighborhood. So, now it’s becoming a problem,” Sedgwick County farmer Kent Winter said.

Rain is in the forecast for Monday but so are severe storms.

“If we come up again short with only 10 or 20 hundredths, it’s not going to go very far, and I know there’s a risk of some severe weather. We’re hoping we can dodge the bullet on that,” said Winter.
