Kansas to embark on $300 million in football facility improvements
Beating Texas can make a moribund football program willing to invest, apparently.
Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger said at a booster event Wednesday night that the school was planning a $300 million investment in its football facilities. While details of the project are sparse, it would include an indoor football facility and upgrades to Memorial Stadium per Kansas.com.
We’re joking about the direct cause-and-effect relationship between the Jayhawks’ 2016 win in the fall and the football spending, but increased optimism about a team’s future can lead to projects like this. Kansas’ 24-21 win over the Longhorns was the first conference victory for coach David Beaty and the first Big 12 win for the school since a 2014 win over Iowa State.
“It’s exciting for me, because it’s a great time to be at KU,” Beaty said. “That guy (Zenger) has done so much here, and for him to clear the deck and really make room for football right now — and he’s a football guy at heart — knowing that our fans deserve a really, really nice stadium … we want these people to be comfortable and really enjoy their time there.”
Kansas is one of the few Power Five schools without an indoor practice facility specifically for football. Memorial Stadium, which was built in 1921, is the seventh-oldest stadium west of the Mississippi per the school. The track was removed from around the football field at the stadium in 2014.
