Kansas Courts to fly flags at half-staff for fallen U.S. Marshal

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Chief Judge Eric Melgren in Wichita has requested that all U.S. flags at District of Kansas courthouses across the state be flown at half-staff.

The flags will be lowered in honor of Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas M. Weeks Jr., who was one of 4 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty while serving an arrest warrant in Charlette, N.C.

U.S. Marshals are responsible for the protection of federal judges and court staff, apprehending federal fugitives, managing and selling criminals’ seized assets they acquired through illegal activities, housing and transporting federal prisoners and operating the Witness Security Program.

Weeks Jr. was a 13-year veteran of the department. Prior to becoming a Deputy U.S. Marshal, he spent eight years with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

He is survived by his wife and four children.
