Kansas couple accused of lying received $170,000 in veteran benefits

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A federal grand jury indicted a Kansas couple for allegedly fraudulently obtaining disability benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

The Department of Justice (DOJ) made the announcement in a press release on March 4 that James Bradford, 47, and Equanda Bradford, 45, of Junction City, have each been charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of theft of public money, property or records.

James, a U.S. Army veteran, and his wife Equanda are accused of giving false and fraudulent information to the VA about James’ caregiver needs and Equanda’s caregiving functions. This resulted in the receipt of more than $172,000 in disability compensation to which the couple was not entitled, according to the press release.
