Kansas City man sentenced to 8 years for 2022 deadly drunk driving crash

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Alexander Kohrs, a 24-year-old, Kansas City man, was sentenced to more than eight years in prison on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to one count of reckless second-degree murder in February for a deadly drunk driving crash.

On Oct. 30, 2022, Kohrs was driving 73 mph in a 35 mph zone when he crashed into the back of 62-year-old Karla O’Malley’s car.

O’Malley, who was on her way home from visiting family, was hit so hard the car’s engine was on the sidewalk, a crash report said. She died 40 days later in the hospital.

After the crash, police did a blood alcohol content test. According to a report, Kohrs blood alcohol level was .27 — over three times the legal limit.
