Kansas City-area law enforcement respond after officer, process server killed

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Law enforcement agencies across the Kansas City metro are responding after an Independence police officer and Jackson County civil process server were shot and killed Thursday afternoon.

Two other officers were shot and wounded and are in the hospital.

Kansas City, Missouri Police

The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department posted a statement Thursday saying “We ache for our brothers and sisters at the Independence Police Department and the 16th Circuit Jackson County process servers. We will support you in any way possible. Kansas City, please keep all these public servants in your thoughts and prayers.”

Overland Park Police

The Overland Park Police Department posted on social media Thursday, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Independence Police Department. We are here for you.”

Kansas City, Kansas Police

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department says “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Independence Police Department and the Jackson County community as they deal with this unfolding tragedy.”

Olathe Police

The Olathe Police Department says “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Officer Cody Allen, Drexel Mack, and the other officers injured along with our brothers and sisters with the Independence, Missouri Police Department, and the Jackson County community that was affected by today’s tragic events.”

Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff

The Johnson County, Kansas Sheriff’s Office said “Sending prayers to those shot, their families, the men and women of the Independence Police Department and the community they serve.”

Clay County Sheriff

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office posted on X: “Our hearts go out to the Independence Police Department, Jackson County court employee, and their loved ones and coworkers hurting so badly right now. Our Peer Support Team and Critical Incident Response Team K9 are in Independence right now to help those impacted by this tragedy.”

Grandview Police

The Grandview Police Department posted on social media “Loss is so difficult, especially when it happens to someone trying to do good and help others. Our hearts are with Independence Police Department.”

Lawrence Police

The Lawrence Police Department said “We grieve with and send our sincerest thoughts and healing and support to our law enforcement family Independence police. Absolutely heart breaking.”

Blue Springs Police

The Blue Springs Police Department posted on Facebook saying “We are saddened to hear the news of an Independence Police Officer and a Jackson County Court employee killed today. Our thoughts and prayers are with those agencies and the families of those who were killed. We hope for a speedy recovery for the injured officers.”

Grain Valley Police

The Grain Valley Police Department says “our hearts are heavy, and our thoughts are with our brothers and sisters in Independence as they deal with this unfolding tragedy. We extend our sincerest sympathies to the Independence Police Department, Jackson County Courts, their loved ones and the community they serve.”

Shawnee Police

The Shawnee Police Department says “We are deeply saddened by the tragic events in Independence, Missouri. Our hearts go out to those who were affected, their families, the dedicated men and women of the Independence Police Department and the entire community they tirelessly serve.”

Lenexa Police

The Lenexa Police Department says “We are thinking of our brothers and sisters at the Independence Police Department and Jackson County Courts this evening. Officer Cody Allen and Process Server Drexel Mack were shot and killed during the course of their duties earlier today. We send our prayers for all involved.”

Oak Grove Police

Oak Grove says “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by today’s tragedy and to our brothers and sisters at Independence Police Department.”

Kansas Highway Patrol

The Kansas Highway Patrol posted on Facebook saying it “extends our heartfelt condolences to the Independence Police Department and Jackson County Courts after the tragic and senseless loss today. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, community and the brothers and sisters of the Independence Police Department and Jackson County Courts.”

Raytown Police

The Raytown Police Department said “the men and women of the Raytown Police Department send out our condolences to the Independence Police Department and the Jackson County Court staff, and our hearts are with all of those who are hurting from, or have been touched by, today’s tragedy.”

Belton Police

The Belton Police Department said “please join us in sending prayers and support for our brothers and sisters in blue with the Independence Police Department and Jackson County Court staff.”

Jackson County Prosecutor

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker issued the following statement:

“Our deepest condolences go to families of the 16th Circuit Court process server and the Independence Police Department officer who died from fatal gunfire today in the course of their duties. We also offer our sincere sympathies to the Circuit Court, the Independence Police Department and the city of Independence. We pray for the two wounded Independence police officers, public servants who also were injured by gunfire.”

“We acknowledge this is a great tragedy but we also know the strength of this community. We will need that strength in coming days.”
