Kansans are choosing to move to Missouri

KANSAS (KSNT) – Kansans are choosing to move to Missouri.

A 2023 study from the Texas A&M University System analyzed the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics data to determine migration flows across the nation. Over the period, more than 7.5 million Americans moved from one state to another.

In Kansas, the largest group of out-migrants decided to move to Missouri. More than 22,000 Kansans moved to Missouri in 2020. Following Missouri, Texas was the next most popular place to move with more than 11,000 Kansans moving to the state in 2020, according to the study.

Other states with the largest number of Kansan out-migrants were:

  • Colorado with 6,813 out-migrants

  • Oklahoma with 5,964 out-migrants

  • California with 4,237 out-migrants

While Kansans are choosing to move to Missouri, Missourians are choosing Kansas. Over the same timeframe, 23,000 Missouri residents moved to the Sunflower State. While the number of Missouri immigrants was greater than the number of Kansas out-migrants, Kansas still had a net loss of nearly 5,000 residents to out-migrants.
