When Kam Chancellor tells you to do something, most people oblige.

The former All-Pro Seattle Seahawks strong safety has a message for the young people out there. Chances are a lot of them aren’t going to like it.

This morning on Twitter, Kam Chancellor reminded us all that our phones are cool and all but they should not come at the expense of people skills. In other words? Put your phone down.

Kam Chancellor says put your phone down:

This may not seem like a big deal. It’s certainly not as pressing as Colin Kaepernick’s controversial National Anthem protest. Still, there is a legitimate problem that a lot of people have with communication and technology.

Last year a professor of psychology at California State University named Larry Rosen wrote in the Wall Street Journal about how constant screen usage is distracting us from real relationships and making us anxious. All that texting and messaging does not remotely compare to live interaction with other people:

“…in one study we found that while empathy can be dispensed in the virtual world, it is only one-sixth as effective in making the recipient feel socially supported compared with empathy proffered in the real world. A hug feels six times more supportive than an emoji.”

This lesson is particularly important for young people living in hip cities like the one Chancellor plays in. If you take a moment to look up from your phone once in a while you might be surprised to discover that there’s a great person sitting across from you.
