Juvenile bike rider seriously injured in Fort Collins crash

DENVER (KDVR) — Fort Collins police are investigating a crash between a driver and a juvenile on a bike.

On May 16, Fort Collins Police Services was called to the intersection of Shallow Pond Drive and Lady Moon Drive just before 8 a.m. after receiving a report that a bicycle rider was on the ground with a possible head injury.

The intersection is in the Fossil Lake neighborhood.

According to investigators, the bicyclist was riding a black and blue mountain bike south on Lady Moon Drive in the bike lane on the east side of the road.

A Ford F-250 truck was driving on Shallow Pond Drive west of Lady Moon Drive and crossing east. Police said that when the vehicle crossed Lady Moon Drive, the front of the truck hit the bicyclist.

The young rider fell to the ground and suffered a serious injury, according to police. The juvenile was taken to a specialized hospital for treatment, but the status of their injuries is unknown at this point.

The driver of the truck remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

“As we enter the summer months, it is important to recognize there will be an increase in multi-modal transportation. We ask all drivers and roadway users to be cognizant of their surroundings to ensure safe travel for all,” said Sgt. Mike Avrech, who oversees the Fort Collins Police Traffic Unit.

The Fort Collins Police Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling Team is still investigating the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed it is asked to call Officer Matt Brede at 970-221-6842.
