Jury selection process for Jason Meade trial begins

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WMCH) – Thursday was the first day of the jury selection process in the highly anticipated trial of a former Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy.

Jason Meade is charged with the murder of 23-year-old Casey Goodson Jr. back in December 2020.

The selection process all happened behind closed doors Thursday. Prospective jurors had to answer a questionnaire to determine if they are fit to be the deciding factor in this high profile trial.

Court documents show the state will be calling 54 witnesses. They also have several dozen pieces of evidence. The records show the defense having more than a dozen pieces of evidence and witnesses.

Monday the official jury selection begins. This trial has been delayed several times. The defense has previously said the challenge with the jury selection will be fairness. They blame this on the massive attention this case has gotten in protests and on social media.

The autopsy report shows Goodson was shot in the back multiple times. Meade’s attorney claims Goodson pointed his gun at Meade then failed to drop the weapon when Meade told him to.

NBC4 reached out to Meade’s attorney, Mark Collins, for a new comment and he declined. Opening statements are set to start on Tuesday.
