Jurors reach verdict in temple slayings trial
PHOENIX (AP) — Jurors have reached a verdict in the third trial of a man charged with killing nine people at a suburban Phoenix Buddhist temple in 1991.
Maricopa County Superior Court spokeswoman Karen Arra says the verdict will be read at 10 a.m.
Johnathan A. Doody was convicted in 1993 and sentenced to 281 years in prison. An appeals court overturned his conviction in 2011, ruling that investigators improperly obtained his confession.
His second trial ended in a mistrial in October after jurors deadlocked. Doody's third trial began Dec. 4.
Jurors got the case on Jan. 13. Wednesday was their fifth full day of deliberations.
Authorities say Doody and an accomplice robbed the temple before killing witnesses. Doody maintains his innocence.
