A parade of people, dancers and cars traveled up Peachtree Street in Louisville Saturday, June 18, in recognition of Juneteenth, a federal holiday recognizing the emancipation of slaves in the United States and is the anniversary of the announcement made in Texas June 19, 1865.

After the parade, which ended at Helen Clark Memorial Park, a Celebration of Freedom continued with speakers, vendors, games and giveaways.

"The turn out went pretty good. It was real nice," said Bobby Adams, president of the Jefferson County Chapter of the SCLC, one of the event sponsors along with We the People for the People and Jefferson County Young Men United.

Adams said attendees at the event said they really enjoyed it. His speech was mainly aimed at the males, encouraging them to be better fathers, to pray with their families.

"They (children) see us drink and smoke, let them have a different vision," he said.

Adams was a civil rights volunteer during the 1960s protesting for equal rights, among those was the ability to vote.

"We can vote," he said. "We see the change."
