Jumanji dethrones The Last Jedi at the box office; Insidious 4 is No. 2

The law of the jungle says only the strong survive, and Sony’s Jumanji reboot is doing just that.

In its third weekend of release, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is poised to earn an estimated $36 million at 3,801 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, surpassing newcomer Insidious: The Last Key and sending previous box office champ Star Wars: The Last Jedi down to third place.

That figure would bring Jumanji’s domestic total to $244.4 million after 19 days in theaters. The film, which reportedly cost $90 million, has also added about $275 million overseas, for a worldwide total of $519.4 million.

Arriving 22 years after its predecessor, Welcome to the Jungle has received generally positive reviews and an A-minus CinemaScore. The Jake Kasdan-directed movie updates the story of a magical board game come to life and stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart.

Taking second place is Universal’s The Last Key, which marks the fourth installment of the Insidious horror franchise and is on pace to gross about $29.3 million. That’s higher than the $22.7 million opening managed by Insidious 3 and way beyond the $13.3 million of the original Insidious (a sleeper hit), but it falls considerably short of Insidious 2, which bowed to $40.3 million in 2013.

Directed by Adam Robitel, The Last Key once again stars Lin Shaye as parapsychologist Elise Rainier, who this time is called upon to investigate supernatural disturbances in a New Mexico home — which turns out to be the house she grew up in. The film garnered generally poor reviews and a B-minus CinemaScore (the lowest such score for the franchise, but still decent in the horror genre).

Dropping down two spots is Disney’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is on track for about $23.6 million in its fourth weekend. Episode VIII of the popular Lucasfilm franchise has now grossed about $572.5 domestically and $632.7 million overseas, for a worldwide total north of $1.2 billion. Although that’s a massive haul, The Last Jedi is on pace for a soft $28.7 million debut in China, the world’s second-largest movie market.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick), The Last Jedi received excellent reviews from critics and an A CinemaScore from moviegoers (though it has polarized some Star Wars diehards). The film, which carries on the saga of intergalactic intrigue, features original Star Wars cast members Mark Hamill and the late Carrie Fisher, as well as new-school stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, and Kelly Marie Tran.

Rounding out the top five are Fox’s Hugh Jackman-starring musical The Greatest Showman, with an estimated $13.8 million, and Universal’s a cappella comedy Pitch Perfect 3, with about $10.2 million.
