Judge denies request to dismiss case against Abbasi

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A request made by former Kern County Board of Supervisors candidate David Abbasi to dismiss two misdemeanor charges brought against him was denied Tuesday morning.

Instead, Judge Chad Louie accepted Abbasi’s not guilty pleas and assigned his case to the Public Defender’s Office. A pretrial conference is scheduled next month.

Abbasi remains out of custody.

Abbasi was arrested twice in March, first for repeatedly calling 911. Abbasi told 17 News he called the emergency number multiple times because a neighbor with whom he shares a wall was smoking indoors and he feared the smoke would trigger an asthma attack.

Within a week, Abbasi was arrested again.

Louie, who explained the charges, said the second count against Abbasi pertained to alleged annoying or harassing calls to the staff of the Kern County Sheriff’s Office.
