Joy Behar Lists Upper West Side Co-Op, Buys Lincoln Center Condo (EXCLUSIVE)
Having shelled out $2.4 million for a condo in Manhattan’s bustling Lincoln Square — more on that in a minute — Brooklyn-born and bred chat show veteran Joy Behar listed her longtime co-operative unit at the discreetly elegant Astor Court building on the Upper West Side at $3.5 million. The sassy, opinionated and, hence, sometimes polemical comedian and co-host of “The View” has owned the three bedroom and three bathroom unit since 2008 when she picked it up for $2.55 million, considerably above its $2.195 million asking price.
A slender, 20-foot-long entrance gallery with glitzy inlaid black and white marble floor leads to a combination living room, dining room and den that makes a remarkable stretch of nearly 50-feet end to end with ten-foot ceilings, dark chocolate stained oak floorboards, thick and traditional ceiling moldings and a fireplace with stone mantelpiece. Overlooking the building’s private gardens, the den is open over a two-stool peninsula snack counter to a chef’s kitchen fitted with black granite countertops on bone toned cabinetry and an array of stainless steel designer appliances that include a commercial-style six-burner range, a warming drawer, an under counter wine fridge and a large capacity fridge. The smallest of the three bedrooms, set up as an office where Behar keeps her 2009 Daytime Emmy statuette — she has ben nominated a total of 15 times, most recently in 2016, has a tiny closet and a closet sized bathroom while the sunny, south-facing master bedroom offers a walk-in closet and windowed bathroom with walk-in shower. Other notable features include three exposures — north, east and south — plus top-of-the-line custom built-ins and fitted closets with automatic lighting.
Designed by architect Charles A. Platt and built in 1915 by Vincent Astor around a pretty English garden, the limestone-based red brick Astor Court provides residents with a children’s playroom, two door-man guarded entrances and a communal roof terrace.
Presumably Ms. Behar is headed about 27 blocks south to a post-modern tower across the street from Lincoln Center where, we first learned from the property gossips at 6sqft, she shelled out $2.4 million for a 1,314-square-foot high-floor unit on the middle floor of a 27-story tower with two bedrooms, three bathrooms, parquet flooring, a pint-sized kitchen and an L-shaped living and dining room with glass sliders to a small balcony.
Like many New Yorkers with the means to do so, Ms. Behar maintains a pricey hideaway in the Hamptons where in September 2016 she concurrently sold a 4,000-square-foot home on just over three-quarters of an acre in East Hampton for $3.2 million and spent $4.75 million on a 4,500-square-foot turreted Victorian that’s walking distance to downtown Sag Harbor and that also includes a separate one-bedroom and one-bathroom guest cottage plus a swimming pool and a landscaped garden with a small pond.
