A Journey Through Red Dwarf: OpenStack Database-as-a-Service on HP Cloud

I got into cloud computing via MySQL, and got into MySQL via cloud computing. MySQL on Linux was how major corporations and large organizations "got the memo" on the value of open source, and it's now those large organizations that are driving the value of cloud computing, especially the vendor-neutral OpenStack® project. MySQL is a fundamental component of the understructure of OpenStack and of most other public clouds.

One of the most common workloads running in a compute node is an instance of MySQL. However, there many challenges getting MySQL to perform well inside a compute node, it makes sense to fold MySQL into the cloud infrastructure and provide it "-as-a-service".
