Fans of Joss Whedon can settle down now because it looks like those reports about the filmmaker dropping out of the Batgirl solo movie aren't true.

Fears about Whedon's future in the DC Extended Universe intensified in recent days because of the critical and box office failure of Justice League - the DC team-up movie Whedon took over for original director Zack Snyder earlier this year.

Whedon definitely didn't win any new fans among the DC faithful when he liked a tweet that described Justice League's Steppenwolf as the "worst comic book movie villain of all time".

By the middle of this week, there were rumours that relations between Whedon and DC Entertainment had soured to the point that he was no longer attached to the company's Batgirl solo movie.

Not true, according to Entertainment Weekly, who reports that Whedon is still very much at work adapting Barbara Gordon's original 1967 origin story and is still expected to direct the project.

There's been no new information about Batgirl in several months, but Whedon did indicate over the summer that he wasn't looking to cast an A-list actress in the title role.

"I'm not against movie stars, they're great. But you need somebody who is going to be just right and in a situation like this, the name carries a lot of weight so it's not as critical," he explained.

Whedon famously helped develop the Marvel Cinematic Universe, before receiving a blessing from his former bosses to jump to DC for both Batgirl and reshoots on Justice League this past spring.

Justice League is now playing in US and UK cinemas. Watch a trailer below:
